Poodles are one of the most popular dog breeds around. The breed is super intelligent and very affectionate. It makes sense that there would be demand for poodles or poodle mixes. There are so many famous Poodle dog mixes that it can be hard to keep them all straight in your head.

That’s why today we’re going through some of the most popular Poodle dog mixes and why these mixes have become so popular.

The Poodle Dog Breed

The Poodle dog breed comes in three different sizes:

  • Standards are more than fifteen inches at the shoulder
  • Miniatures are below fifteen inches at the shoulder
  • Toys are below ten inches at the shoulder

The breed has a strange past since there is no agreement about where it comes from. The Fédération Cynologique Internationale claims that the Poodle comes from France, but the American Kennel Club and the British Kennel Club claim the Poodle comes from Germany.

For sure, the name Poodle comes from the German word pudel. The breed was known to splash around in the water as it’s a great swimmer. The name could be evidence that the Poodle is a German breed. On the other hand, France certainly has popularized the dog.

The Poodle is a very active breed. They may have gotten a reputation of being a posh or wimpy breed, but this couldn’t be further from the truth. Poodles are incredibly smart. They are said to be the second most intelligent breed behind only the Border Collie. Their speed comes in just behind the Whippet, which is pretty impressive.

The last few decades have seen a resurgence of Poodles as hunting dogs. They make great companions for hunting waterfowl. They’re not afraid of the water one bit. The only complaint a hunter might have is that the Poodle gets bored with easy training tasks. They are intelligent and up for a challenge, so be sure you keep their attention.
